Dark spots and pigmentation, especially on the face, are one of the greatest aesthetic concerns facing people today. Repeated sun exposure, hormones, and heat can result in mottling and brown spots on the skin. Cosmelan is a depigmentation agent which acts by decreasing melanin from the skin. Melanin is responsible for the darkening of the skin. Cosmelan is currently being used to lighten up (depigment) skin. It has the ability to inhibit an enzyme (tyrosinase) that is involved in the process of causing skin darkening (melanin). Cosmelan leads to a decrease in melanin synthesis and hence to a decrease in darkened skin color.
